I'm glad I read this because it gives me hope. It will just take some practice. I can deal with that. I do wish the instructions had said there may be a (painful) learning curve, but I was glad they did say not to panic when it won't come out (eventually it did, but I will be working on the technique - down, not out, you say, and I'll have to remember that).

Anyway, thank you for being bold enough to share such personal details so that people like me and I'm sure many others know that it can take practice.

This is so funny!!! My husband, W, is just now collecting data about our instant hot water thingy. It is a Japanese machine which keeps water hot all the time. Between 3 adults, we drink a lot of tea. However, W plugged the thing into a power meter recently and it was drawing 88W! Yikes. We found there is a timer on it that turns it off for 7 hours which I am sure will help. W is going to test that, too. Great minds think alike.

The most efficient dishwashers use about 10 litres of water per load (down from an average of 60 litres in 1965). I just did a SMALL load of dishes and used 6 litres. A dishwasher washes probably 6 times as many dishes in one load.

Energy use is about 300 kWh per year (some 2008 models go as low as 230 kWh). This includes the energy used to heat the water (your water heater) and is 95% less than dishwashers built in the early 70s. So the amount of energy and the amount of water go hand-in-hand.

Also, if you look at the entire life-cycle of a dishwasher (from production to use to disposal of the product), about 95% of the energy is used during the use of the product, not in manufacturing.

Hmm... the only issue then is the cash to buy one of these efficient models. Or maybe I should just get a solar water heater and then the electricity use wouldn't be an issue!

My sources are: http://www.appliancemagazine.com/ae/editorial.php?article=1393&zone=215&first=1 and Natural Resources Canada 2007 EnerGuide Appliance Directory.

Great ideas. The baking soda shaker is a fantastic idea. Just finished a jar of mayo that would be perfect. Should probably wash it first.

Thanks for the great idea for my baking soda! I've got a peanut butter jar that I've been saving for some purpose and I think this will keep me from pouring out too much baking soda from the box when I'm cleaning.
