Good for you! I have a stash of "to be recycled" stuff in a downstairs closet. It's actually not that big. I don't know if my husband knows it is there. :)

Nice blog post! I recently went to a plastics recycling event here in Portland, Oregon. It really opened my eyes about what can be recycled if there is a place that accepts certain plastics. I found out something which you mention above, that "film" is recyclable and can be recycled at grocery stores that have a place for recycling plastic grocery bags. I am interested in exploring what can / can not be recycled here. There are so many things that I have been thinking of as "trash" which could be recycled. I just never really examined my thinking about these things. One example is the wrapper for bagged lettuce. I always used to throw it away. Now I know, you are saying why are you getting the bagged lettuce in the first place? All I can say is that I call on the Twin Defense (http://creationhalt.blogspot.com/2008/02/twin-defense.html)!

My experience at the recycling event did change my behavior. Last time I went shopping I got a head of Romaine, no packaging and we just planted some lettuce in our new raised beds (built with all left over wood from our basement remodel).

In the next few months we will be moving to a similar "co-mingled" recycling system and I am looking forward to it. They recycle many things here in Portland but they don't recycle everything. I am committing to save up some of the things that can't be recycled until the next big recycling event. (Although I must say...my husband is not crazy about this idea!).
